Plastic sealant: Choose the right adhesive for your job

Artificial Content Title -- to be hidden

With so many types of plastic sealants and adhesives, it can be hard to find the one you need. This guide is for you. Get the basics on the different liquid sealants for plastic and when to use each one.

Why use a special plastic sealant?

It’s hard to look around any room and not find something made of plastic. There are a wide variety of plastics, each with different characteristics. While many types of glues and sealants will stick to most plastics, for the best results, choose a sealant designed for the plastic you will be working with.

The most common plastic sealants fall into 3 categories: silicone-based, super glue, and epoxy. Silicone is often used in wet environments or where temperatures constantly change, such as around windows, doors, and sinks. Its flexibility and anti-mould properties ensure long-lasting protection.

Super glue is excellent for quick repairs to smaller items due to its fast drying time and strong bond. Super glue comes in many forms including liquids and gels. Read the label to find the combination of features best suited for your project.

Finally, epoxies are two-part adhesives that start to set when mixed. They form extremely strong, rigid bonds and have the ability to span larger gaps and adhere to a wide variety of surfaces. Again, there are many formulas designed for specific materials, so due diligence on your part is essential.

Silicone glue for plastic

If you’re looking for a waterproof sealant for plastic, a silicone glue may be the answer. Silicone is widely used as a sealant for plastic, tiles, windows and doors, and many other materials. It is highly waterproof and durable and stays flexible for years.

Check the manufacturer’s specifications for compatibility with the materials you’re working with.

    Best liquid sealants for plastic

So what are some of the best, all-around liquid sealants and adhesives for plastic? Here are two of our favourites:

Loctite Super Glue All Plastics is the ideal adhesive for many repairs and projects with plastic. It is a simple two-part system. Apply the activator to both surfaces and wait 1 minute, then apply a small amount of the adhesive and press the surfaces together. It bonds in just seconds.

Super Glue All Plastics will form a resilient bond to most plastics – even those that are typically difficult to work with such as polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP).

If you need the extreme strength and durability of an epoxy, try Loctite Plastic Bonder. It comes in a dual syringe for trouble-free dispensing and mixing and sets in 20–25 minutes. This specialty epoxy will not shrink, is resistant to water and most solvents, and can be sanded and drilled when fully dry. It is recommended for PVC, ABS, FRP, Nylon, Mylar, polycarbonate, and most other plastics.
