Learn how to replace the seal on a toilet outlet pipe in this simple article. It will beautify your bathroom and protect against odours or leaks.
A good seal around the toilet base is important for many reasons. It prevents leaks or possible sewer gas from entering the home, makes the toilet base more attractive, and can prevent a toilet from wobbling when in use.
If the toilet is installed properly and sits against the floor, replacing the seal around a toilet base is an easy job.
Here are some basic instructions on how to seal around a toilet.
- Gather your tools and materials. You’ll need a utility knife or sealant removal tool, bathroom cleaner, water, cleaning cloth or paper towels, painter’s tape, sealant tube, and caulking gun (if required). We recommend protective gear such as nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Remove any existing sealant. Use a sealant removal tool or a utility knife along the bottom edge of the toilet to scrape away the old material. Sweep or vacuum the old material away.
- Clean the toilet base. Use an all-purpose bathroom cleaner and a cloth to clean the joint. The area must be free from debris and any residue.
- Check the toilet for level and tightness. If the toilet is loose, tighten the bolts at the base or use a shim if needed. If the toilet is leaking or you smell sewer gas, remove it and replace the wax ring before continuing.
- Apply painter’s tape around the base to give you a straight, clean line and protect your floors from the sealant.
- Apply the sealant. If using a squeezable tube, apply an even bead around the entire base of the toilet. If using a caulking gun, keep the gun at a 45° angle to the floor, and apply sealant around the base using even pressure. Ensure there are no gaps in the sealant.
- Smooth out the sealant. Using a wet finger or gloved finger, smooth the sealant and blend the edges onto the tape. A caulking tool works very well for this also. Remove excess sealant, leaving a smooth, finished bead.
- Remove the tape. Carefully peel away the tape to reveal nice straight lines.
- Clean up any excess sealant from the floor or toilet base. Use a damp cloth or paper towel. If you are using silicone sealant, you may want to use mineral spirits rather than water. Avoid getting mineral spirits on your skin.
- Allow the sealant to fully cure before use.
Always use a high-quality sealant to replace a toilet seal. A premium silicone kitchen and bath sealant is ideal. These are water and mould resistant and should last for years.
